What to watch in Q4 2026

  • Peak-season demand: September–October is traditionally strong for Chinese battery production; spot buyers reported tight physical supply even as futures fell.
  • Chinese supply: the status of lepidolite mines in Jiangxi and new salt-lake output.
  • Restarts and new mines: output from restarted Australian operations and new African supply ahead of Zimbabwe’s January 2027 concentrate export ban.
  • Inventories: whether the higher post-revision stock numbers keep rising or start to fall.
  • Policy: US and EU critical-minerals measures and Chinese export controls on battery technology.

Where analysts disagree

Views reported in September 2026 ranged from a fall towards 100,000 yuan/t by year-end to firm support around 140,000 yuan/t. Benchmark highlighted that price risk now differs by product and contract tenor, which is why buyers increasingly hedge carbonate and hydroxide separately. Rather than pick a number, we suggest tracking the indicators listed in our supply-demand analysis.
